May 8, 2008 -- Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club, a 27 hole public golf course in Sunset Beach, NC, is announcing a major renovation project that will start this summer, June 2008.
Sandpiper, which hosts public golf as well as membership play, will be converting its putting greens to MiniVerde Ultradwarf Bermuda grass. MiniVerde is one of the newest and best products for putting surfaces in the Myrtle Beach area.
The project will be done in three phases, as the Sand nine holes will be redone this summer, and the Piper nine and the Bay nine will be redone in the summers of 2009 and 2010. The facility will never have to close, due to the innovative design and routing of the courses, and this summer will operate as an eighteen hole facility.
Sandpiper Bay is very proud of its past reputation for great golf course conditions, and this project will advance their position and place themselves as a leader in providing a quality golf experience for its guests and members.
The MiniVerde Bermuda was chosen because it has proven to be the best of the newly developed ultradwarf Bermuda grasses used for putting surfaces in the Carolinas. It is ranked highest for the area by the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program.
The grass provides a smooth and high quality putting green that is great for golfers and can handle the heat, humidity, and stress caused by Carolina summers. It has a proven track record, as it is already in place at TPC Sawgrass - home of the PGA Tour Players Championship, TPC Myrtle Beach, and was also recently chosen by East Lake in Atlanta, home of the TOUR Championship. All of the above courses, including Sandpiper, have hired Modern Turf, out of Rembert, SC to install the new greens.
During the renovation process, Sandpiper Bay will also be resurfacing the cart paths on the Sand nine holes, and will be refurbishing the bridge structures. Many trees will be removed, and bunkers and play areas will be enhanced to improve the playability of the golf course.
Rest rooms and many clubhouse areas have already been restored to meet the demands of the ownership's commitment to quality. Sandpiper, already a local's favorite, and a neighborhood and membership course that is very popular, will soon be taking a new step up in providing a great golf experience.
